Selarid (selamectin) Topical Solution is a monthly parasiticide designed for cats weighing 5.1–15 lbs and aged 8 weeks or older. This prescription medication prevents heartworm disease and effectively treats and controls a range of parasites, including fleas (Ctenocephalides felis), ear mites (Otodectes cynotis), roundworms (Toxocara cati), and hookworms (Ancylostoma tubaeforme). Selarid works by killing adult fleas and preventing flea eggs from hatching for one month, thereby breaking the flea life cycle. The active ingredient, selamectin, is a macrocyclic lactone compound that interferes with the nervous system of parasites, leading to their elimination. The application is straightforward: part the cat's hair at the base of the neck and apply all the contents of the single-dose applicator directly to the skin. Selarid is generally well-tolerated, but as with any medication, consult your veterinarian before use, especially if your cat is sick, debilitated, or underweight.
